Hat Styles - The Pillbox

Pillbox hats first appeared in the 1930s and were widely worn by the 1940s and 1950s.

They are a simple, yet elegant design, typically worn perched on an angle, paired with a coordinating suit or dress.

One of the most famous wearers of the Pillbox was Jackie Kennedy, who popularised the style in the 1960s. She wore many pillbox style hats during her time as First Lady of the United States, including a pink one designed by Halston that she donned for her husband's inauguration.

Throughout the 1960s, the Pillbox was a popular choice for brides, often with the addition of a short veil. Although the popularity of Pillboxes declined in the 1970s and 1980s as hairstyles took prominence, milliners have continued to update and re-invent the Pillbox. Recently Pillboxes have experienced a resurgence in popularity. They can be dressed up or down, and pair well with both vintage and modern styles.
