Our Philosophy

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Jo Ramsay Millinery is created in our sunny Australian studio. We're committed to producing slow fashion that is ethical, sustainable and investment-worthy. We use natural, rescued and reclaimed materials; we incorporate ethical production practices; we strive to conserve resources; and we embrace opportunities to repair, refurbish and redesign your investment pieces to enjoy for a lifetime.

We handcraft headwear using sustainable processes that minimise the usage of energy, water, chemicals, plastics and synthetics.

REDUCE AND REUSE

Our studio is solar-powered and we minimise water usage, chemicals, synthetics and plastics.

Stitching is done by hand, or with our antique sewing machines. Trims and embellishments are created with vintage fabrics and materials rescued from landfill.

Petals are cut from rescued and reclaimed fabrics, then coloured, shaped and assembled by hand. Each bloom is a delicate work of art.

RESCUE AND RECLAIM

The fabric blooms that feature in our headpieces are created at our Tirra Lirra Atelier using rescued and reclaimed vintage silks and other fabrics.

Each bloom at the Tirra Lirra Atelier is cut by hand, with almost nothing thrown away.

Our collections focus on quality not quantity. Our Ready to Wear collections are limited release and Couture pieces are one-off designs.

RENEW AND REUSE

Our Ready to Wear and Couture Collections are designed to make the best use of our reclaimed and rescued materials.

We enjoy working with the unique properties of natural fibres, rescued vintage fabrics and reclaimed off-cut materials from the fashion and textiles industries that would otherwise go to landfill. Read more . . .

Production practices are regularly updated toward leaving no trace, apart from beautiful headwear and images.

RECYCLED AND RECYCLABLE

We prioritise and promote marketing, packaging and storage solutions that use recycled and recyclable materials.

We aim to find a use for each small off-cut of fabric, straw, wire and trim. Read more . . .

Machine-stitching is done with our rescued antique machines that are still going strong after more than 100 years.
