Hat Blocks

Hat Blocks

As a milliner, one of my most treasured possessions is my collection of hat blocks.

My vintage and antique blocks have their own unique history - they've been used by many milliners before me, so I hold millinery history in my hands each time I use them.

My first two blocks were given to me by the milliner I trained with, and I cherish them dearly. Since then, my collection has grown and some of my blocks are over 100 years old. My newer blocks are ones I've chosen that have been meticulously crafted by contemporary block-makers. Their history has begun with me, but they'll continue their stories for many years to come.

I enjoy working with the weight and texture of each with their marks and scratches from years of use. Each block has its own story, and I love imagining the many hands that have held it before me.

One of my favourite things about using hat blocks is the level of craftsmanship that is evident in each one. Crown and brim blocks are made by skilled woodworkers who understand how to use the grain of the wood to create blocks that are functional. The angles and curves of each block are a testament to the level of skill and dedication that went into their creation.

I feel honoured to be a custodian of my collection of blocks and play a small part in their continued legacy.
